Memorial Day Weekend

For Memorial Day weekend we went down to the San Rafael Swell with our friends, Courtney and Jeff, and their dogs, Abbie and Max. Even though it rained most of the day on Saturday, we made the best of it. It always feels good to get out of town for a weekend. Sunday and Monday were gorgeous. Enjoy the pics!

Here we are, making the best of a rainy Saturday. We played a lot of hands of Crazy Eights.

Our reprieve from the rain--it was a great little "home" for 3 days.

Very old miner's cabin--there was still a stove in it.

We went on a 5-mile hike on Sunday that included crossing Muddy Creek about 20 times.

Whirlwind of a Trip to San Diego

Let's look on the positive side here--We got to see Andy's mom for an early Mother's Day. We ate a delicious dinner by the beach. We got to visit with Andy's sister for a bit. Yes, it was only a 12-hour stay (6 of which we slept), but it's just exciting that we are able to go on road trips to different states. We always love an adventure and, boy, this was nothing short of that! After arriving in San Diego at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, I wanted to check my school email to read any updates on the swine flu that hit our district. As I was reading my email, another email popped up saying schools would be going back on Thursday, May 7th. Yikes!!!! We weren't told to be "on call" and it was everybody's impression that the district made it very clear we needed to be out for 14 days. We're not sure why they had a sudden change of mind, but that meant we would have to leave San Diego EARLY the next morning--like 4:45 a.m. early to beat traffic. We took turns driving and made it back home safely. We felt like zombies at work today, though.

We left Park City on Monday morning and stopped to camp at Red Rock Canyon that night, which is north of Las Vegas.

What a sight!

We folded one of the seats down in the car and Cooper was trying to make it look like he was comfortable. He doesn't look that comfortable to me.

We ate dinner at The Beach House which is, not surprising, right on the beach.

Our New Pets

When I left the house this morning, I never thought I would come home with 3 hermit crabs. They were given to us by one of the instructors for our ESL class. She had brought them to class to demonstrate a lesson (good realia) and must have noticed Andy taking a liking to them. She asked if he wanted one and he said "sure." Well, we ended up bringing 3 hermit crabs home and let's just say Cooper was a tad confused. They will end up at school. Andy and I might rotate them from his classroom to my classroom.

Cooper didn't take his eyes off of them for the longest time.

They are cute little things.

This is the best we can do for a home right now. We didn't exactly have a good set-up for housing hermit crabs just laying around.

Have you ever seen a grown man look so excited about hermit crabs?

Desert Camping

With spring break underway, we decided to get out of town for a few nights so we headed down to the desert. It was awesome! Our first stop was Goblin Valley. Words can't even describe it so the best we can do is photos.

our home for the first night

Goblin Valley

Your imagination could run wild with some of the formations...

On the next night, we stayed near the San Rafael Reef, just in front of the San Rafael Swell.

I think one of Andy's favorite parts was "talking" to the cows.

This is the result from Cooper having too much fun in Goblin Valley. His feet were really sore so we put on his "sneakers" (aka "desert shoes") during a hike.

We think we spotted pronghorns, but we're not really sure what they were.

The wind really picked up around lunch time and never really stopped until dinner time, which was perfect because that meant we could have a fire. Boy, were we fooled. I'm not sure what time it was, but it had to have been right after going to bed, but the wind really picked up--all night long. It was not a good night for sleep--we probably got about 3-4 hours. Whatever it was, it felt like we were awake more than we were sleeping. The wind was blowing so hard at times we thought the tent poles would break. We got up the next morning to more wind, to the point where it felt relentless. It wasn't slowing down. Needless to say, the desert is not great for my contacts as it is, but throw in some 40 mph winds and it really is not good. We decided to take a different route that day, hoping the wind would die down because we had planned to stay one more night somewhere down in the desert. Our route took us up through the San Rafael Swell. We encountered every kind of weather possible--wind, rain, sun, and snow. Yep, snow in the desert. Anyways, we drove along admiring the beauty of some amazing rock formations. To make a long story short, we ended up driving home that night. I learned some things during this trip:
1. It's inevitable that sand will end up in anything you eat and drink. You just have to get used to it. Don't worry if you hear a loud crunching sound as you bite into a sandwich. It's just sand.

2. Make sure to always have your eye glasses with you (if you wear contacts). Thank goodness I brought mine along.

3. If you have a dog, his/her eating habits will change because they are in a new environment and tend not to eat as much. That does not, however, mean they will not have the farts. Oh my word...we had to put up with some very bad Cooper gas on the long drive home. Not fun when you're enclosed in a small space. Whew...

Temple Mountain--I believe it's named that because it resembles a temple in Lehi, UT (or somewhere in UT).

Our Version of an Easter Egg Hunt

On Easter Sunday, the Park City Mountain Resort had its own Easter egg hunt. We got there before the chair lifts even started running, in hopes of finding a golden egg. There were two golden eggs and each contained a certificate for a season pass for next year. We never found a golden egg but we did find a free ticket for the alpine coaster this summer! Yahoo!

Tina's Visit to Park City

My sister was in town this past Wednesday through Sunday. We had a lot of fun! For her birthday, I got her a ski lesson. She loved it! Here are a few photos from her ski adventure.

Big Ski Weekend

What a life! It's crazy to think that skiing may be getting in the way of things we need to get done, but we love it! It's 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night as I sit and post this blog and I feel like I'm ready for bed. Yesterday, we met some friends at The Canyons, skied for a couple of hours, watched the pond skimming competition and then watched The Wailers concert. This morning, we met some friends and went skiing at Alta. On the way down to Salt Lake to meet our friends, we encountered a major wind storm in Parley's Canyon which caused a whole bunch of debris to fly up and hit our windshield. Not fun. We weren't quite sure we were even going to go skiing because it started to rain, then turned to snow while we waited out the storm. Well, we knew we couldn't make a decision until we were actually up at Alta, so off we went. The drive up was slow going. As we got there, it was still pretty windy but it was snowing and that means one thing--powder. Anyways, it was another fun ski weekend!

Winter is Back!

It's not a typical reaction to winter, but we're just not ready to put our skis away quite yet. As excited as we are to get out on our bikes, I need to get in a few more days on the slopes. Plus, my sister is coming to town next week and I've bought her a "never ever ski lesson." (Uh, that means it will be her first time, ever, on skis!!) We are both so excited!

We didn't get out skiing this afternoon, but we did get out for an amazing snowshoe around some old mining buildings.

No Longer in My 20's

For my 30th birthday, Andy planned a get together at his aunt and uncle's advertising business. It was so much fun to have everyone together, sipping wine and eating munchies. Andy's mom even flew in from San Diego to be a part of the festivities! My 20's were great and I can only imagine my 30's being even better.

Thanks for a great time, Andy!!!

Out and About

After a glorious morning of skiing, we took Cooper out for a snowshoe hike. It was such a beautiful day today. Hopefully, we get that storm they are predicting for Monday and Tuesday. It's always nice to get a fresh coat of white stuff.
